Emergency 05:05
take a breath / but don't sleep branches break / in the trees scaled the wall / coast is clear feels like rain / wish you were here wait to rest / run don't speak you may decide / you don't need me scan the sky / the molten moon hear the waves / be there soon i'm getting out i’ll send ok when the dust has cleared let’s set a time let’s get a date down i got an offer i can't refuse failed to launch / emergency can't believe / this is happening where to now / is not so clear fake a death / disappear i'm getting out i’ll send ok when the dust has cleared let’s set a time let’s get a date down i got an offer i can't refuse

and he's burned with his eyes and he's pushed back the wind and he's fought the last battle the villains can win he waves bye to us look, he's tired and he'll wanna be turning back home he'll save lives no more like, do you wanna be tearing yourself into two? and he's sure you won't mind and he's sure it's the end and into your plain clothes into the wind he waves bye to us look, he's tired and he'll wanna be turning back home he'll save lives no more like, do you wanna be tearing yourself into two?

Running Joke 04:25
The color of the sky is grey and the world’s at an all-time low Feels like we were warned but that storm was meant for another Oh, is this a running joke? Oh oh oh, well, this is getting old The color of the sky is grey since you’ve gone and the world so cold Feels like you were born with something much more than others Oh, is this a running joke? Oh oh oh, well, this is getting old Need a place to hide I can’t seem to find and the bars all closed Since when did you decide that we’d be alright in the gutter? The color of the sky is grey and the world’s at an all-time low Feels like you were born with something much more than others Oh, this is a running joke Oh oh oh, this shit is getting old

oh, the way we were it's not the way that we are now so roll away the tears they'll soon be gone whispers at dawn come soon oh, the wasted love there's not enough then there's too much...love oh, the golden age when will it come? not soon enough for us and when you turn your heart away you fall into a place where it turns out it's too cold and you're too old oh, the way we were it's not the way that we are now so roll away the tears they'll soon be gone whispers at dawn come soon and when you turn your heart away you fall into a place where it turns out it's too cold and you're too old and you're too old and it's too cold

100 Nights 03:05
i've been waiting for you to come home i've been waiting for so long, so long a flash in the sky caught the mist into the light i've been waiting for you to come home i'm afraid you won't return at all i'm the stranger walking through your walls if you could send a sign i'll wait up a hundred nights i'm the stranger walking through your walls if you could send a sign i'll wait up a hundred nights i'm the stranger waking up alone

when you woke up said you were still drunk fell asleep with all of your clothes still on and the rain starts to fall and it's a terrible storm and the faith you once had is gone and the words that you type are just the saddest of songs it's the train you've been on too long and the weight of the world starts to drag you down it's ok, we won't let you drown and you woke up and said "this is all a waste, bring me back to life" then we sat on the roof and we thought of all the ways we would have to die and the future resides in pre-millennial fear and the three zeros growing near and the weight of the world starts to drag you down it's ok, we won't let you drown and you won't believe you could grow up and you wake up and you're 31 and you won't believe when it's over and you wake up everything is gone and you decide that you will drive all night get away, shut out all the lights and the moon and the stars and the satellites above all burning hot and bright and the windows are down and it's your favorite song the escape you've been waiting on it's the turn of the century don't look down there's no way, we won't let you drown

wish you were smarter than that it's not a time to agree 100 days and i broke the glass and split the seams we decided that this was just a bad dream we cannot wake up from nothing can calm me terrible today...terrible today I have seen you curse and spit and run away broke your hand in the wall "this isn't happening" set off all the alarms this fever just won't break join me, we'll howl at the dawn of another day terrible today...terrible today i was nostalgic before time had a chance to breathe today i'm leaving the house that i was born in a slight buzz and i'm feeling every little thing the perfect gleam of the floors follow the sunbeam but it's so easy to look back now and say we had it so much better than we do today terrible today...terrible today

Wish Us Luck 02:33
due to the rain flash flood bad blood you are fucked this lonesome wind this vulgar — pick yourself up broke the bank can't save just wave you are sunk and float in piss and mud here in the dark wish us luck pass the blame back on their grave made of mud sit on golden shitter groaning working your thumbs there's no shame no thought, restraint no love just a broken, bitter soulless, miserable fuck wish us luck

if there's blood in the water if there's blood in the water please don't go if there's blood in the water if there's blood in the water please don't go it may feel warm you might say words and then wish them gone and you've been warned put your hands up and walk out put your hands up and walk toward me real slow put your hands up and walk out put your hands up and cross your fingers, girl you may feel warm you might say words and then wish them gone and you've been warned if there's blood in the water if there's blood in the water please don't go if there's blood in the water if there's blood in the water please don't go it may feel warm you might say words and then wish them gone and you've been warned and you've been warned and you've been warned

about

Someone asked me recently whether I was still going by the stage name of "Danny Doom," the implication being that such a pseudonym had become, with age, unnecessary and perhaps even silly. I recall that in the early days of Milk at Midnight, with an awful new president and then 9/11, the idea of creating an alias and wearing a pink cape seemed an appropriate response, as did writing a rock opera about a motorcycle daredevil named Revie. Alas, here we are again in similar yet somehow profoundly worse shape than the now-halcyon days of the early aughts. What the holy fuck happened?

The songs presented here are not political, except for "Terrible Today," which started as one thing (nostalgia) and became another (fury). "Emergency" is a short film of an escape gone bad. "100 Nights" is about a person who is convinced his lover has not left him but instead been abducted by aliens.

Some of these songs have been sitting around for awhile, such as "Not Soon Enough," a song for Morrissey to sing; "Crush Crush," which was recorded on the earlier set of demos but now has programmed (better) drums and a different tuning; and "Blood in the Water," a song made to play over the end credits of a nonexistent independent film noir.

"Turn of the Century" was written in remembrance of a great trip to California back in 1999 but as always ended up not being about that at all. "Running Joke" is the most recent song here and it's not very funny. NOTE: as of March 19, 2020, the song "The Overworked Superhero" has been added to the mix.

Given the current state, it has become a challenge to not primally scream via song (I am working on one right now with the title "White Evangelical America is an Immoral Wasteland." Too subtle?). Anyway, it is clearly time for a new escape hatch/emergency response, like a mini-opera about Bigfoot or a family trapped in quicksand, I don't know. As far as the Danny Doom, I believe it is best to leave the old name behind and start anew with something more age-appropriate, so: Daniel Doom.

All songs were recorded and played by me, with the exception of "Crush Crush," which features bass by Stephanie. Drums were programmed in Garageband.
